THE LITTLE RED LIGHTHOUSE AND THE GREAT GRAY BRIDGE

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge is based on a book by same title by Hildegarde Swift and illustrated by Lynd Ward. It tells a fantastical tale of a real-life lighthouse watching the construction of the George Washington Bridge. The lighthouse feels unimportant and unwanted next to such an impressive structure, but learns that thought it is small, it has a very important role to play. The opera is a new work by area composer Misha Dutka.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Little Red Riding Hood is based on the classic children's tale, set to music by famed Russian composer Cesar Cui in 1911, specifically for a children’s audience.  It has never before been performed in the Western Hemisphere – certainly not in English!  Cui, whose style is often compared to Schumann and Gounod, gave the story a happy ending so that everyone lives and learns important lessons. The original Russian text has been translated to English by Misha Dutka.

This children's opera was dedicated to the young son of Tsar Nicholas II.
